Morris Marshall Development Centre
Constant reports of crime and dispossession in East Port of Spain reminded WAND that as citizens we ought to do our part to improve the lives of children by assisting them to become productive citizens. We then contacted Father Clyde Harvey, Parish priest of the Gonzales RC Church, Laventille and Chairman of the Morris Marshall Development Foundation (MMDF, formerly the East Port of Spain Scholarship Committee) to discuss how WAND could be of service to the community.
He advised that the MMDF Centre was closed due to lack of funds, and that immediate funding was needed to host the 2014 Holiday Camp (July-August), which essentially focused on developing the leadership skills of 30-40 children- teenagers of the St. Barb’s and surrounding area, providing them with a programme of education, excitement, fun and positive experiences.
The expected outcome would be enhanced confidence, improved self-esteem and most importantly, building their problem solving skills.
WAND has refurbished the MMDF Centre with the support of our Partners from the diplomatic and business communities, private citizens and civil society and the After School Assistance Programme resumed on Monday 04, May, 2015.
The Centre would become once again the central point for:
- A Homework Centre
- Parent Teacher Association
- Family and Community Mediation
- Education, Culture, Creative Arts and Sport
The After School Assistance Programme will tutor children ages 5 to 12 in Numeracy, Literacy, Life Skills, Music Appreciation and Computer Studies.
